Kerry

when the wind stopped

and the rain clouds dissipated

and the sea was once again in view

from behind a grey cloud

ray after ray of sunlight

found earth

first a far off field

and a closer hedge

then the pile of soil

then diamonds bouncing

off  the rain drops

on the long grass

then the big oak tree

the near hedge

the big black cow

the back of the old red hen

the fence

and me

in that moment

life was laid out before me

the earth made sense

I was in life

and it was in me

I belonged

For Those Contemplating Suicide

Lord Jesus
Help all those who are suicidal
bring them back from the darkness
and surround them with your healing light
Send a friend who they can talk to
End their loneliness
Ease their pain
Bring them hope
Bring them peace
Give them strength to face another day
and wrap them in your loving embrace
Amen

Amen

Should we not greet
should we not meet
again
if this be the last
I see of thee
or thee of me
then I say farewell
may you be well
may troubles pass thee by
and woes

May joys and laughter
music and peace
thereafter
dwell within
and without
God be with thee
now
and always

Carrownanty

Sleep evades me
I closed the door
as the noise of the tractor
was too loud
for this quiet house
full of coughing
and old body sounds
Check the sleeping
for the rise and fall of the breast
Here Romney and Obama
don't matter
Merkel and Enda
can French kiss
Dogs can be dogs
and cats cats
And bank holidays seldom exist
Breakfast and dinner and tea
Are served on time
tablets are eeked out
Red wine is a must

Shiraz

Sitting alone here
Just me and Shiraz
Quietly contemplating
Life as it as
Considering flowers
And bananas and bees
And pains in my ass bum
And finger and knees
And laughing inside me
Considering I am
Just happy to be here
With me as I as

The Phone

I like
And share
On the Facepage
I tweet
and follow
on Twitter
I Blog
I post
I download
I upload
I backup
Wi-Fi
Bluetooth
Hotspot
Icloud
Itunes
iBooks
all on my phone.
I remember
standing in a green concrete box
with little windows
Winding a handle and lifting the heavy handset
To speak to an operator
in the post office on top of the Rock in Ballymote
Who would in turn stick a jack into a hole
and connect me to another Post office somewhere else
and would connect me to another wind up phone somewhere
Miles away
I felt so sophisticated then

She Forgot About Mass

Two white heads
bent low
over the ridge
dropping cabbage plants
into holes
in the warm soil
holes he made
with her worn spade
son
and mother
helping him
she stumbles on the soft soil
both remembering
a time
long ago
“Get those cabbage plants in
before your father gets home”
back then
when she
for peace sake
helped him
